2023 Review: Our Busiest Year Yet!

IllusoryScript.com in 2023

39 articles published

In 2023 we published an article almost every week of the year. That’s the commitment we make to our subscribers and that’s the goal we’re striving for in 2024. Every week you can look forward to a sometimes thoughtful, sometimes quirky but always informative article.

More analytics

Late this year we also added a little more analytic functionality to the website. We strive for minimal invasiveness which is why we still don’t use Google analytics.

Nonetheless, here’s our most read articles since we started tracking in September:

  1. 100 D&D Warm-Up Questions
  2. Hand Out Character Secrets Before A D&D Session
  3. How To Run A Radiant Citadel D&D Campaign
My favorite articles of 2023

I agree with the readers of the website. The three articles that were most popular are also some of my favorites. I use the 100 Warm-Up Questions every session I run, and I’ve had a blast writing up my tips for running a Radiant Citadel campaign after finishing running it early in the year. An honorable mention goes to an article which I keep coming back to to remind myself of how I run games best: By putting obstacles in front of characters without worrying about solutions.

But, I generally have more fun reading other people’s thoughts. Which is why my absolute favorite articles of the year were written by our very first guest authors. In 2024, I want to at least double the amount of articles written by guest authors!

  • The Art of War (and Combat) in D&D by Ali
  • The DM Pep Talk You Deserve by Alli (two “l”s, and also the artist behind the image atop this post)

DMsGuild Publications

2023 also marked the year of publishing more supplements on the DMsGuild. We published a line of NPC villain PDFs for each class (more are still to come in 2024). These products are designed to give DMs easy-to-use, evocative and exciting villains for their games. There’s a bundle where you can get all of them at a 20% discount:

  • NPC Villains Bundle

The second line of PDFs revolves around the Elves and the Feywild. The Court of the Undying made such an impression on me that I wrote a supplement which let’s DMs put the Eberron institution into their own game world. Another piece of elvish lore, the proto-elves called the Seldarine, was so inspiring to me that I wrote NPCs which can bring the Seldarine to life in your game!

  • The Court of the Undying
  • Chosen of the Seldarine

Social media (sort of)

We also launched a Mastodon account and a YouTube channel in 2023. I’m sorry to say that we’re largely inactive on both of those. I made two YouTube videos, one about a deadlier version of D&D and one about variant ability checks:

  • Ten Ways to Run a Deadly D&D Game (No Homebrew!)
  • Useful Variant Ability Checks in D&D

In 2024 I want to publish more videos but I haven’t yet found a way to integrate it into my IllusoryScript workflow…

What do you want from us in 2024?

What would you like to see IllusoryScript doing in 2024? More YouTube videos? Specific article topics? More social media presence? More options to support us (potentially monetarily on Patreon)?

Write us an email at info.illusoryscript@gmail.com with your ideas and requests for illusoryscript.com in 2024!

Build the Villain Together We GMs often arrive at session zero of our RPG with a clear idea of who the villain is. Maybe we even have their stat block ready to go, name and all. But what if we didn’t? What if, instead, we built our main RPG villains with the players, using their …

Balancing Roleplaying in Combat Combat can be one of the most memorable parts of a session—but not just because of the dice rolls or tactical maneuvers. Some of our favorite combat scenes come alive because of the roleplaying woven into them. But how do we strike that balance? How do we include character moments without …

  • Creating NPCs Based On PCsMay 17, 2025
One of the core principles we can return to again and again as DMs is this: Build the world around the player characters. In today’s article, let’s apply that principle to one of the most important elements of our games: Creating NPCs (non-player characters) based on the PCs (player characters). Why Build Around the PCs? …

  • The After-Credit Scene in D&DMay 10, 2025
The Only Worthwhile Cutscene Cutscenes are for video games. In D&D, they almost always get in the way. With one exception: the after-credit scene. When we narrate a scene in which the characters are not present, we’re putting story over play. We’re turning our players into an audience instead of participants. If players can’t act in …
