One-Line NPCs

NPCs are the backbone of the social interaction pillar in Dungeons & Dragons. They drive stories, provide hooks, and create memorable moments for our players. But crafting a compelling NPC doesn’t have to be complicated. With a simple one-line formula, we can generate unique NPCs which are easy to roleplay at the table.

The Simple NPC Template

When coming up with an NPC, we can define them using a single sentence which includes:

  • Two adjectives (describe personality and attitude)
  • One noun (role, background, or defining feature)
  • One verbal mannerism (how they speak)
  • One physical mannerism (how they move or act)

This method (which was inspired in part by the character creation process of Numenera) keeps things simple while giving our NPCs distinct traits that help us make them come alive at the table.

If we want to add some more flavor, we can use a gimmick. Because every character should have a gimmick!

10 NPC Examples

Here are some examples to show you what a one-line NPC description could look like:

  1. Gruff, Loyal Blacksmith who always clears throat before speaking and wipes hands on apron constantly.
  2. Jovial, Forgetful Merchant who repeats customer’s name too often and scratches their head while speaking.
  3. Stoic, Wise Monk who speaks in proverbs and stands completely still.
  4. Eccentric, Frenzied Wizard who talks too fast and jumps topics and waves their hands wildly while speaking.
  5. Stern, Cunning Noble who drawls words with disdain and taps fingers on the table when impatient.
  6. Timid, Fidgety Scribe who stutters when nervous and adjusts spectacles constantly.
  7. Charming, Shady Bard who overuses flattery and winks at inappropriate moments.
  8. Grumpy, Honest Guard who gives short, blunt answers and rolls shoulders before speaking.
  9. Anxious, Paranoid Alchemist who constantly whispers and checks over their shoulder often.
  10. Boisterous, Clumsy Fisherman who laughs too loudly and slaps people on the back mid-sentence.

Roleplaying One-Line NPCs

When introducing an NPC, scan this one-line description. Then improvise the interaction with the party. I often focus on an NPCs mannerisms first. A NPCs personality shines through how they speak and move before players even learn about their background. This quick-build method allows us to generate unique NPCs which are easy to roleplay. Try it in your next session and watch your NPCs become unforgettable!
