I’m excited to share something I’ve been working on during this last year, together with my friend, Alain Dunphy. We’ve written an adventure called Secrets of the Betrayer! It’s a 10th-level adventure and an expansion for Vecna: Eve of Ruin. However, it also works as a standalone adventure set in Tovag—the cursed Domain of Dread ruled by Kas the Betrayer.
Alain and I started this project in early 2024. We had previously run a game as co-DMs with great success. Now, with Secrets of the Betrayer, we set out to fix the rough transition between chapters 1 and 2 in Eve of Ruin.
The adventure begins with a battlefield in chaos, leads to branching paths full of tough choices, and ends with a brutal showdown against a simulacrum of Kas. We poured a lot of time into creating memorable encounters and a custom boss that’s challenging even for 10th-level parties.
And Secrets of the Betrayer is now out as a gorgeous PDF! It’s filled with custom art that really brings Tovag to life—bleak, twisted, and filled with danger. Seeing everything come together has been incredibly satisfying.
Highlights of Secrets of the Betrayer
A Battlefield Start
The adventure throws the players right into the chaos of a battlefield of undead carnage. There’s no slow build-up—they’re in the thick of it from the start, and getting out alive is the first challenge.
Two Paths to Doomtooth Fortress
One of my favorite parts of the design: the players get to choose how they travel across Tovag. There are two routes to get to the fortress of Kas, and each comes with its own set of challenges and rewards. One is more combat-heavy, the other requires puzzle-solving and careful navigation. And the players have to choose!
The Final Battle
At the end of it all, the party faces Kas’s simulacrum. The simulacrum is a custom boss monster we had a lot of fun designing. The final battle is a tough fight with some twists to keep players on their toes. And it’s meant to feel like a fitting climax to everything they’ve been through. Here’s the stat block for the simulacrum:
Run it Your Way!
You might be running Vecna: Eve of Ruin and want a smoother story. Or you’re looking for a one-shot that throws your players into a dark and brutal adventure. In either case, I think, Secrets of the Betrayer will deliver. I’m really happy with how it turned out, and I hope it brings as much excitement to your table as it did to Alain and I while designing it.
